Cytokines and chemokines produced in the airways of young and aged mice following LPS challenge. Young and aged mice were challenged intranasally with 100ng LPS or PBS vehicle only. After 4 h, bronchoalveolar lavage was performed and cytokines and chemokines were measured by ELISA in BAL fluid supernatant. Each data point represents an individual mouse and bars show mean +/- SEM. Filled circles = young and open circles = aged mice. Data are representative of two independent experiments. The lower limit of detection is shown as a dotted line. Significance was determined by two-way ANOVA, comparing each mean with others in its age group and with others in the LPS or PBS groups. *P ≤ 0.05; **P ≤ 0.01; ***P ≤ 0.001; ****P ≤ 0.0001
