  1. Young (n = 12) and old (n = 6) mice were intraperitoneally infected with cecal slurry from healthy mice (0.3 mg/g BW). Posture, appearance, spontaneous activity, responsiveness, and respiration rate and quality were each scored on a scale from 0 (normal) to 4 (severely impaired) and combined into one sepsis score (0–20). Body temperatures and sepsis scores were determined 16 h after infection and compared to those of healthy animals (n = 35) that ranged in age from 9–81 weeks. Blood bacterial counts were measured at the time of euthanasia (16–24 h after infection). CFU; colony forming units.
